Getting The Marquee Light Working Again (tracking down odd starter ballasts)

When I got the cab one of the few things I knew didn’t work at all (possibly the only thing that was actually faulty) was the marquee light.  Not the “Vs” display or the “Winner” lights, those are fine.  It’s good old fluorescent lamp for  lighting up the marquee card.

Now, it’s probably something simple like the ballast / starer has gone (everything else looks fine) but, in true Sega Style, it’s a screw type ballast and unlike anything anyone in any UK lighting / electronics shop seems to have seen.

In the blast City manual the part is referred to as “Glow Lamp – 390-5638-1E” and searching for this brings up not a lot.  Specifically it bring up a forum post asking where to get one from (not helpful).  However, digging a little deeper ONE site has that part referenced (as a Konami spare oddly) and has an alternative type of “FG-1E” mentioned alongside that part in the description field.  It’s an E17 screw type and looks like the one I need but, typically, it’s only available in America (Amazon wont even ship it to the UK for some reason).

I have found 1 UK based supplier that seems to stock it so I’ve taken the plunge and bought one (despite it being one of those “shipping costs more than the part” type deals).

If it works I’ll post details and pictures.
